Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

At Crestwood, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a Foundational Tool used to support persons served receiving mental health care. DBT is a modified cognitive-behavioral treatment that is the only evidence-based practice to prevent suicide.

Crestwood has been offering Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) since 2009. DBT is an empowering therapeutic approach designed to help individuals harness their innate strengths so they can manage and overcome emotional challenges. Developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, PhD, DBT integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with principles of mindfulness that foster a holistic path to recovery and emphasize personal growth and resilience. All findings suggest that DBT is more effective at targeting and reducing suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. DBT also improves treatment retention, reduces medical lethality of suicide attempts, and decreases hospitalizations and ER visits.

At its core, DBT treatment methods indicate that everyone possesses the capacity for positive change and inner resources to lead a fulfilling life. As a therapeutic practice, DBT is particularly effective for individuals experiencing intense emotions, self-destructive behaviors, or relational difficulties. It provides a structured yet flexible framework that empowers individuals to build a life worth living through skill development and self-acceptance.

DBT is structured around four key modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Each module is designed to enhance an individual's strengths, by promoting self-efficacy and helping them build up emotional resilience. In collaboration with DBT modules, this treatment method also features a key component, called dialectical approach, which emphasizes balancing acceptance and change. In doing this work, therapists validate individuals' experiences and emotions, while guiding them toward constructive change. This balance cultivates a sense of self-compassion and motivation as individuals recognize their intrinsic worth and potential for growth.

DBT is a powerful and affirming approach that fosters emotional well-being. By providing practical skills and nurturing self-compassion, DBT empowers individuals to overcome challenges, build meaningful relationships, and lead lives filled with purpose and fulfillment. Through this journey, individuals discover their resilience, embrace their potential, and thrive in pursuing a balanced and enriched life.
